How To Do Kung Fu – Quick Beginner’s Guide

Since the late 20th Century, Kung Fu has gained a much more worldwide popularity and attention.

This rise in attention has got a lot of people wondering how to do Kung Fu and what is the easiest or most effective was to learn it.

There are lots of different ways to approach learning a martial art like Kung Fu, and often one of the most effective ways is to find a reputable teacher or school in a local area to teach you in a way that suits you and them best.

However, there are often lots of factors that can make this difficult. For example, you will likely not be able to find a teacher if you do not live close to an area with a high enough population.

For some people this will be a nearby city, for others there might not even be one in their country.

And even if there is a Kung Fu school or teacher near enough for you to reach, this does not mean that they are good or will be a compatible teacher.

Some people if they are dedicated enough will move to a country which has a lot of good teachers and school available, but if you are picking up this martial art on a more casual basis or just want to try it out to see if it is something you will enjoy, this is not viable.

But luckily we live in the internet era, and while it is not always the most effective method, a near endless amount of information is available for free or cheap on the internet.

This means that while learning Kung Fu from home may not be the effective method, it is one of the most convenient for a large portion of the population.

When it comes to learning Kung Fu online from home, there are steps you can take to make the process more efficient and effective.

One thing you will want to make sure to do, is find a resource, usually a video series which you enjoy and assess if the teaching style suits you.

Also, you will need to check if parts of the teaching are behind a pay wall and if you are willing to pay for it.

There is also some equipment that will make this task easier. A training dummy is a good object for tactile responses to your techniques, but even better than this is an actual partner.

Learning a skill like this with a companion will make the process more fun, but also more effective.

It is also good to have a good mirror in the room to make sure you are moving properly, but if you have a partner who can help you correct your form, this is also helpful.

Is It Possible To Teach Yourself Kung Fu?

While it is technically possible to teach yourself Kung Fu from something like a book, the more guidance you receive, the better results you will end up getting.

Luckily there is a multitude of resources that are available online to give you the best guidance possible for often very affordable prices, and sometimes completely free.

There is an almost endless supply of YouTube videos with a teaching course structure, and these can be great resources, especially for beginners.

However, the more high quality of these video series may have significant portions of content behind a pay wall, or sometime just the first few videos are free to get a taste.

In cases like this, the best thing you can do is take advantage of the free content available and if you think the content is worth spending more on, it will be worth buying to continue, but if you think you could find better guidance, it is then worth moving on to a different teaching source.

If you want something more personal than online videos, but still do not have access to a local teacher, there are now many more live classes that are taught over video calls.

These range in style with you sometimes being part of a larger group with little one on one attention, or if you are willing to pay more, you can buy one on one sessions that will give you the attention you may need if you are a beginner who wants to nail the foundational skills.

If you are just beginning, getting one on one sessions can be incredibly beneficial for the important key skills it will help you hone, but if you can not afford it, or justify the cost, maybe wait until you are sure you want to.

With Kung Fu, the best thing you can do to get good results is to commit and practice regularly.

Having the motivation to do this can be difficult for a lot of people, especially if you struggle with staying motivated if you are not picking up a skill quickly.

But with Kung Fu, this is incredibly common, learning the initial skills is one of the biggest learning curves to overcome, and doing this by yourself with minimal guidance can be very challenging.

However, the satisfaction from nailing moves you have been trying for a long time is very rewarding, especially if you are self-taught.

Conclusion – How Long Will It Take?

How long it will take to master Kung Fu will vary, but getting a handle on the basics can take only 6 months if you train regularly and dedicate yourself to perfecting this partial art.

However, this can vary greatly depending on the amount of guidance you have, and even getting the basics could take years.

If you are enjoying Kung Fu but struggling to learn the basics by yourself, this is when it is worth contacting a teacher to help improve your progress.

But if you really do not want to spend anything, you will have to dedicate your effort and time to make good progress!
